Sciatica Treatment
Sciatica is characterized by pain radiating along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the hips and down each leg. Typically affecting one side of the body, sciatica often originates from a herniated disk or a bone spur compressing the nerve, leading to inflammation, pain, and sometimes numbness. The condition is most common in individuals over 50, though it rarely occurs before age 20. It is essential to seek immediate medical attention if experiencing these symptoms to address the underlying cause and manage the pain effectively.
In Ayurveda, sciatica is described as Gridhrasi, named after the eagle due to the gait of the affected individual resembling an eagle’s walk. Ayurveda views sciatica as a disorder caused by imbalances in the Vata dosha, which governs movement and functionality in the body. Sometimes, an imbalance of Kapha dosha, which is responsible for lubrication, also contributes to the condition. Ayurvedic treatments focus on restoring balance through Panchakarma therapies and internal medicines, aiming to correct these imbalances and alleviate symptoms effectively.
