Ulcer Treatment
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the large intestine, or colon. The colon is crucial in the digestive system for absorbing water from undigested food, with the remaining waste being stored until elimination. In individuals with ulcerative colitis, the inner lining of the colon becomes inflamed and develops painful ulcers. This inflammation disrupts the normal functioning of the colon, leading to a variety of distressing symptoms.
Patients with ulcerative colitis often experience abdominal pain, frequent diarrhea, and rectal bleeding. The condition can significantly impact daily life and overall health, as the persistent inflammation and ulceration can lead to complications and reduced quality of life. Proper diagnosis and management are essential for controlling symptoms and improving patient outcomes.
Ayurvedic View
Known as Pittaj Grahani in Ayurveda, Ulcerative Colitis is primarily a disease of Pitta Dosha, with varying degrees of Vata involvement in some cases. The excessive consumption of Pitta-aggravating foods and lifestyle initially damages both rakta dhatu (blood tissue) and mamsa dhatu (muscle tissue), leading to formation of ama that gets deposited between the villi in the intestines. This ama forms a smooth coating that impairs the normal function and immunity of the intestines. Vata Dosha in the lower colon is also aggravated and, in the early stages, blocks the Pitta and Kapha channels, causing inflammation, mucous accumulation, and edema.
Treatment
Ayurvedic treatment of Ulcerative Colitis involves gently eliminating the ama, restoring healthy digestion, and creating a bacterially-friendly environment in the body. After the basic strength and immunity of the body is restored, the treatment focuses on natural healing of the ulcers.
